DESCRIPTION:On Saturday and Sunday\, April 6th and 7th\, we will hold an Open House at the Kingston Lock-tender’s House as part of our celebration of the 50th Anniversary of the D&R Canal State Park and the D&R Canal Commission.  \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThe Open House will feature a new display: “Kingston’s Lock: History Preserved– Photos and Drawings from 1936 re-interpreted for the 21st Century”\, which celebrates the preservation of drawings and photographs of canal structures created during the Great Depression by the Historic American Building Survey (HABS)\, with a new display\, making these formal drawings accessible to modern viewers. \n\n\n\nDuring the Open House\, members of the Society be on hand and will demonstrate models of the Kingston Lock and Kingston’s former A-Frame bridge which carried road traffic across the canal. The north display room has recently been repaired and both display rooms will be open. \n\n\n\nThe Open House will be from 10 am – 5 pm on both Saturday and Sunday; the Kingston Lock-tender’s House is on the D&R Canal just off Route 27\, Kingston\, New Jersey. \n\n\n\nWe hope you will join us at the Open House. It is an opportunity to engage with KHS members and learn more about the exhibits\, the D&R Canal\, Kingston’s history and KHS. \n\n\n\n\nThe New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection\, Division of Parks and Forestry\, State Park Service owns and manages the Delaware and Raritan (D&R) Canal and towpath as a state park. DESCRIPTION:Walk the Lock!\n\nExploring the Kingston Lock Area\n\n\nJoin KHS officers Robert von Zumbusch and Charlie Dieterich on an easy Saturday Afternoon walk around the Kingston Lock\, showing what is still there and what was once there. \n\n\n\nLocktender’s House\, Toll/Telegraph House and replacement bridge at Kingston Lock.\n\n\n\nThis easy stroll will focus on historic structures of the Delaware and Raritan Canal in the Kingston area. Come see the history and learn how the canal worked.   \n\n\n\nThe mile-long journey will begin and end at the Kingston Locktender’s House\, just off Route 27 at the foot of the Kingston hill (GPS location: 4492 Route 27\, Princeton.) \n\n\n\nMap of Kingston and Canal Area with Locktender’s House (arrow) Parking is behind and beside the Locktender’s House.  Flemer Preserve parking is on north side of Lincoln Highway/Main Street/Route 27.\n\n\n\nParticipants will walk on the D & R Canal towpath and other paths that are flat\, but may be muddy\, so appropriate footwear is advised. There will also be an opportunity to see the canal exhibits and a demonstration of models of the lock and original A-Frame bridge in the Locktender’s House. \n\n\n\nThe event is free and open to all. Children should be carefully supervised near the canal and its structures. Parking is available in the State Park lots\, along the road\, and also across Route 27 in the Flemer Preserve. \n\n\n\nThe walk with be “rain shower or shine” – if needed\, bring an umbrella.  In the event of heavy rain\, we’ll talk inside and point out the windows.
