Open House at Lock-tender’s House Celebrates Re-opening

April 6 @ 10:00 am 5:00 pm

On Saturday and Sunday, April 6th and 7th, we will hold an Open House at the Kingston Lock-tender’s House as part of our celebration of the 50th Anniversary of the D&R Canal State Park and the D&R Canal Commission.

The Open House will feature a new display:Kingston’s Lock: History Preserved– Photos and Drawings from 1936 re-interpreted for the 21st Century”, which celebrates the preservation of drawings and photographs of canal structures created during the Great Depression by the Historic American Building Survey (HABS), with a new display, making these formal drawings accessible to modern viewers.

During the Open House, members of the Society be on hand and will demonstrate models of the Kingston Lock and Kingston’s former A-Frame bridge which carried road traffic across the canal. The north display room has recently been repaired and both display rooms will be open.

The Open House will be from 10 am – 5 pm on both Saturday and Sunday; the Kingston Lock-tender’s House is on the D&R Canal just off Route 27, Kingston, New Jersey.

We hope you will join us at the Open House. It is an opportunity to engage with KHS members and learn more about the exhibits, the D&R Canal, Kingston’s history and KHS.

The New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection, Division of Parks and Forestry, State Park Service owns and manages the Delaware and Raritan (D&R) Canal and towpath as a state park. The D&R Canal Commission, legislated in 1974, assists with the development of the park and regulates land use in the park’s 400-square-mile watershed.
